It is possible to assign badges to learners based on different criteria. Whether it is the achievement of a knowledge level for one or more topics, the successful completion of practical activities, or the acquisition of skills, designers can define precise conditions to reward learners.
When a badge is earned upon completion of a program, the learner can download it as an image file.
Badges are visible:
For learners: on the last page at the end of the program, and afterward in their dashboard.
For designers, instructors, managers, and administrators: in the program dashboard.
Badges help reinforce motivation and recognition of achievements.
General Settings
This feature is configured at the program level. Designers (owners and collaborators) and administrators therefore have access to this feature based on their program permissions in the Studio.
Accessing badge creation
Click the “Settings” button (new button).
Then open the Badges and Certificates tab.
It is possible to configure multiple badges for a single program in order to recognize different levels of mastery or specific skills.
For example, badges can be awarded based on the overall knowledge level achieved:
Gold Badge: score between 80% and 100%
Silver Badge: score between 60% and 79%
Bronze Badge: score between 0% and 59%
Another option is to award badges by mastered topic or successfully completed practical case. A learner may earn a “Subject A Master” badge or a “Subject B Master” badge as soon as a predefined success threshold is reached (for example, 80% for a given topic).
⚠️ When multiple badges are associated with the same program, make sure the awarding criteria are clearly defined and properly configured:
Verify whether badges should be mutually exclusive or cumulative.
Confirm whether it makes sense for a learner to earn multiple badges.
Ensure that criteria are defined with or without overlap, depending on the intended objective.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: They are issued from the moment they are created, |
Creating a badge
Click “+ Create a badge.” A side panel opens.
A default badge visual is provided in B12. This visual automatically adapts to:
Your color scheme as defined in B12
Your organization’s logo as defined in B12
The program title as defined in the Studio
You can also upload your own image for each badge (recommended size: 400 × 400).
Click the three dots and select “Replace image.”
3. Add a title and a description to the badge. This helps clearly identify and differentiate badges, in addition to the image that can be customized for each configuration. The title and description are also visible to learners and other users when they view the badge in the dashboard.
If your program is offered in two languages, the badges will also be available in both languages. You will be able to upload separate images, and fill in separate title and descriptions.
4. Add the earning criteria:
Program completion AND one or more of the following conditions (all combinations are possible):
Overall knowledge level across all topics
Knowledge level for one or more specific topics
Overall score across all practical cases
Score for one or more specific practical cases
Skills achieved
The entire program must be completed to earn a badge. It is not possible to award badges for the completion of a section or a sequence.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: To earn a badge, all criteria must be met individually.
Learner experience and dashboard display
Upon program completion, on the final screen of the last sequence, the badge(s) earned are displayed to the learner.
Badges can then be viewed and downloaded as image files:
- In the learner’s dashboard
- In the dashboards of administrators / managers / instructors / designers
A table displays all distributed badges. Clicking on a badge shows its details and the learners who have received it.
Managing badges (editing and revoking)
Reminder: Badges are not issued retroactively. They are issued from the moment they are created to all learners who meet the criteria after creation.
Editing a badge
If you edit a badge, no changes will be applied to learners who have already earned it.
Example: You increase the required score to earn the badge from 80% to 90%. All learners who already earned the badge with a score between 80% and 90% will keep their badge. When they view the badge, the new criteria will be displayed, even though those criteria did not apply at the time the badge was awarded.
When you make changes and click “Edit,” B12 suggests creating a new badge. This allows you to create a new badge for the updated conditions without affecting learners who earned the previous badge.
Deleting a badge
- If you delete a badge, it will no longer be active on the platform, but it will not be revoked from learners who have already received it. This is how a badge can be “deactivated” so it is no longer issued.
Revoking a badge
The table at the bottom of the screen allows you to revoke badges.
A revoked badge will no longer appear in the learner’s dashboard or in the dashboards of administrators, managers, instructors, and designers.
